Cowboys' spread offense based on the run “We’ve worked hard and our offensive line has worked hard,” Toston said. “Me, Kendall and Beau all can say that all of our praises go to our offensive line. They have worked hard. The holes are big. We have the easy jobs. We just have to run through them.”
It doesn’t hurt that Oklahoma State’s quarterback, junior Zac Robinson, also is a running threat, having recorded two 100-yard rushing games since becoming the starter early last season. Robinson also is a capable thrower and ranks fourth in the Big 12 in pass efficiency, having completed 52 of 73 attempts this season with seven touchdowns and three interceptions. The Cowboys also have an emerging star at wide receiver in sophomore Dez Bryant — he caught three touchdown passes from Robinson against Troy — and a highly regarded NFL prospect in senior tight end Brandon Pettigrew. Combined with the running backs, they are helping the Cowboys put up offensive numbers not seen at Oklahoma State since the 1988 season, when Barry Sanders won the Heisman Trophy and led the Cowboys to a 10-2 mark. Gundy, the quarterback of that 1988 team, remains the school’s career passing yardage leader, but is convinced a run-based offense is the path to success for the Cowboys. “We want to run the ball,” Gundy said. “I don’t think it’s any secret. And if we have to throw it, and the pass is there, then we’ll take it.”
