Prep roundup: 10-3

From staff reports
Baseball
CLASS A REGIONAL AT OKTAHA
-- The No. 2-ranked Tigers punched a ticket to fall state for the second time in three seasons with a 13-1 win over 10th-ranked Soper.

It was getting to that matchup that was the hard part.

Earlier in the day, Cale Elam scored from second on consecutive wild pitches in the bottom of the 13th inning to give the Tigers a ultra-tense 3-2 win over No. 13 Wister in a first-round game. The Tigers won it without the benefit of a hit in that frame. Elam drew a one-out walk, John Hayes walked to move him into scoring position, and the wild pitches took him in from there.

“It’s been a long day,” Oktaha coach Chris Burt said. “We go 13 innings and have seven opportunities to score runs and don’t. We go up in the winner’s bracket and score as many runs in the first as we did the entire first game. Go figure.”

Cameron Proctor threw 7 1/3 innings in the opener, allowing just one earned run. Elam entered in the eighth and threw scoreless ball for 4 2/3 innings, including a two-on, one-out eighth inning jam. He struck out nine. Burt had to pull him to save him for a possible game today that didn’t happen.

John Hayes (3-2) escaped runners at the corner with one out in the 13th to get the win.

An Elam sacrifice fly tied it in the third and back-to-back doubles by Proctor and Eric Sheridan tied the game at 2 in the sixth.

Daniel Hayes (4-1) allowed just three hits, only one escaping the infield, in the second game. He had seven strikeouts. He and Proctor had two hits each. Elam’s RBI double helped spark the three-run first. He was 3-for-4 in the contest.

Oktaha will take a 30-6 mark to state.

No. 13 Wister and No. 5 Okarche at 2 p.m. with the winner playing Soper at 4 p.m.

Softball
CLASS 3A AT ADAIR

Class 2A AT OKTAHA — Oktaha swept through the first day of its regional, beating Stroud 5-0 and Konowa 3-1.

Oktaha will play the winner of Stroud/Konowa at 2 p.m. this afternoon.

CLASS 2A AT PORUM — Warner dropped its first game 13-2 to Hillton, but bounced back later in the day top beat Porum 5-4.

Against Porum, Warner trailed 4-3 into the top of the seventh inning, but got a leadoff single from Michaela Vail that kickstarted its offense.

Kaitlyn Teague, who picked up the win to move her record to 10-7) then bunted Vail over to second before Jori McPeak tripled to center field to knock her in and tie the game. Brooke Stidham then singled in McPeak to give Warner (15-15) the lead.

Warner will play the loser of last night’s Sallisaw Central/Hillton game today at 12:30.

CLASS A AT DEWAR — Porter lost a slugfest then had to rebound to stay alive here Thursday.

The Lady Pirates lost to Barnsdall 13-9 thanks to seven unanswered runs but came back to beat Welch 11-6. They’ll play Barnsdall in a rematch today with the winner having to beat Dewar twice to make it to the state tournament.

Mesti Turner (17-8) gave up seven hits and struck out four in the victory, She also went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, including a two-run double as part of a six-run fourth inning that made it 10-0. Chastity Martin and Katy Harsen each had two hits in that contest. Harsen had a two-run double.

Jerika Stallings was 2-for-4 with three RBIs in the Barnsdall loss. Porter, now 18-9, led 3-1, fell behind 6-3 and regained the lead at 9-6 before falling behind for good.
