Bulldogs’ offense erupts in win

— FORT GIBSON — With the offensive line healthy for the first time all season, Wagoner was firing on all cylinders Friday night, cruising to a 54-14 win against Fort Gibson at Leo Donahue Stadium.
The Bulldogs racked up 499 yards on offense, 376 of those on the ground.
“We had all our linemen back for the first time all season tonight,” said WHS head coach Dale Condict. “They blocked really well.”
Oklahoma commit Gus Jones led Wagoner’s rushing attack with 141 yards and four touchdowns.
“He’s about as close to full tilt as he’s been since the first game,” said Condict. “He’s a big, strong athlete, and he’s hard to tackle.”
While the Bulldogs offense thrived, the Tigers were haunted by several untimely turnovers. Fort Gibson had five turnovers in all.
“We won’t win unless we take care of the ball,” said FGHS head coach Jeff Taylor. “A team as physical as they are, you have to.”
Wagoner (3-2, 2-0 District 4A-4) jumped out early with three first quarter touchdowns, two of those from quarterback Prince McJunkins. McJunkins finished the night with 179 yards of total offense and two touchdowns.
After Jones scored his second touchdown of the night with 6:07 left in the half, the Tigers found themselves in a 27-0 hole.
Fort Gibson (2-3, 1-1 District 4A-4) then rallied and scored on a pair of Taylor Richey touchdown passes to cut the deficit to 27-14 going into halftime.
Richey finished the first half 10 of 18 with two touchdown passes, but struggled in the second half with just 48 yards and a pair of interceptions.
The Tigers then were outscored 27-0 in the second half and gained just 74 yards of offense.
“We came in at halftime and made some adjustments,” said Taylor. “Then it was big play, then turnover, big play, then turnover.”
Both teams continue their District 4A-4 schedule next week with the Tigers traveling to Sallisaw and Wagoner hosting Poteau.
“We’ve got a big stretch coming up,” said Condict. “Our district title hopes are still alive. I feel good about the opportunities ahead.”
