Spiro driver breaks tie on final night at OMS

OKTAHA – Tied in points in the Hobby Stock point championship, it was only natural that Spiro’s Broopkin Stephens and Muskogee’s Randy Moses II started side-by-side six rows from the pole setter in the feature in dirt track racing Friday night at Outlaw Motor Speedway.

And as expected, neither driver remained there very long, running second (Moses) and third (Stephens) just three laps into the race. But on lap five, Stephens zipped past Moses in turn one and wrestled the lead from Darrell Sweet (Claremore) on the backstretch and never looked back to claim the point title by eight points with his ninth checkered flag of the year.

Stephens’ championship was one of four settled on this final point night of racing.

Coming to OMS with the Modified division point championship securely tucked away, Greg Skaggs of Bixby tried to add an explanation point to the title, but one Charles Randolph of Muskogee was in his way. Randolph ended Skaggs' string of four feature wins in a row by claiming his second triumph of the year.

Muskogee’s Dennis Slader won the Economy Modified title while James Gillean of Boynton captured the Pure Stock hardware, claiming the title in winning his 10th feature of the year.

HOBBY STOCK

Moses, by virtue of a second place finish in his heat, went into the feature with a one-point lead over Stephens, who finished third in his heat. He had three opportunities to close ground on the winner because of caution flags, but after each restart, Stephens reestablished his dominance.

At one time (at the halfway point), Stephens had a five-second lead over the field. He was three seconds ahead of Arnold at the finish with Moses right on his bumper for third. Inola’s Justin Shoemaker, who had an outside shot at the title if the leaders faltered, finished sixth.

ECONOMY MODIFIED

Slader went into the feature leading Jake Kelley of Glenpool, the 2006 champion, by 14 points. Kelley did all he could to capture his second track championship, winning the feature, but Slader was second in the race, retaining his 14-point advantage.

Midway through the 20-lap chase, Slader was sixth. He moved to fourth after a pair of restarts on laps 13 and 14, but eventually wrestled second from Porter’s Carl Conley four laps from the end. From there, Slader and Conley battled back-and-forth for the spot, but neither had the car to catch Kelley who won his sixth feature of the year.

MODIFIED

Starting on the sixth row inside (12th) Skaggs rushed to fifth after three laps and after a restart on lap six, he was third. He got to second on lap eight and set his sites on Randolph, who had claimed superiority early in the race. Skaggs did not had enough car on this night to catch the "Chicken Man" who used the middle groove to hold on to the lead. Skaggs made repeated attempts to get past Randolph in the low groove, but he just couldn’t generate enough power out on the turns to challenge for the lead.

Finishing third in the feature was Muskogee’s Tate Cole. Fausten Wilhite of Tahlequah was fourth.

PURE STOCK

Gillean took the lead on lap 10 and was never really challenged one he got to the front of the field. Tahlequah’s Jason Ward went into the feature trailing Gillean by just nine points. While Gillean was able to navigate through heavy traffic, Ward found himself bogged down.

He finished a distant seventh. Matt Burnett of Muskogee was second with Russell McClain of Chouteau third.

Gillean, Ward, and Brandie Levasseur of Chouteau were locked in a battle for the title for the past five races. Levasseur finished third in points with a fifth place finish in the feature.

OCRS SPRINTS

It was all roses for Jamie Passmore from Rose as he lead from flag-to-flag to win the special 20-lap feature. It was fifth win of the year for the points leader.

Rose out-dueled Matt Sherrell of Owasso, for the win. Sherrell, second in points, took the runner-up spot when he passed Danny Smith of Sapulpa after a restart with four laps to go. The race got the yellow flag, one of four in the event, when got sideways in turn three, forcing the caution.
