Hilldale, Fort Gibson search for answers with Red-White Rumble looming

As disappointing as the 28-21 overtime loss in District 4A-4 to Muldrow was for his Hilldale Hornets, coach Don Hendrix found several things to be happy about.
“Our execution on offense was good, especially on some big third downs. We made plays to keep drives alive,” he said. “ We didn’t have deep touchdown passes thrown against us. We played better than we have. It was a real good game.”
Meanwhile, Fort Gibson gave up a last first-half touchdown on the way to losing 39-7 to Sallisaw in another 4A-4 game. It was the Tigers’ second straight loss.
The highlight for Hilldale came when marched 67 yards on 16 plays to tie the game at 21-21 in the fourth quarter.
“It’s one of those drives you have to have if you want to win,” Hendrix said.
Of course, the loss was tough to take.
The Hornets gave up a 3-yard touchdown pass to Muldrow in the OT and then lost yardage on three plays in their series during the extra period to lose their sixth straight game.
“We didn’t have good execution three of our four downs, but I hate to say anything because we had done some good things throughout the game,” he said. “Our kids did a real good job.
“I’m discouraged for them because we’re 0-6 and we easily could’ve easily won two or three games out of the six. If we were sitting here 3-3, I’d say the season was all right, but not great. I feel for the kids because they’ve put in the time and work.”
Fort Gibson’s discouragement came at the end of the first half when Sallisaw scored with two seconds left to increase its lead to 21-7.
“We missed two tackles and out of the gate he went,” coach Jeff Taylor said. “That was a disheartening deal right before the half. I don’t know how to put it. It’s frustrating as a coach and player. They want to win and do well.
“We had some good things going for us. The defense played well.”
But it wasn’t too last as the Tigers as they dropped to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in league play.
“We didn’t line up correctly (defensively in the second half),” Taylor said. “How can we do it for two quarters and can’t do it for the rest of the game?
“Our kids dropped their heads a little bit after that (late first-half) touchdown but they came out fired up and ready to go again. We had a missed block here and a missed tackle there.”
