Jenks rolls over Muskogee

By Mike Kays
Phoenix Sports Editor

JENKS — To beat No. 1 Jenks, Muskogee coach Matt Hennesy said the Roughers had to be perfect.

They weren’t.

The result: predictable.

The Trojans rolled to a 58-15 victory and wrapped up the District 6A-3 title at Hunter-Dwelley Stadium Friday night, dominating in all facets of the game, scoring on eight of their first nine possessions going into the second half.

The Roughers’ best chance at turning the momentum came trailing 14-0. Following Brenton Bogar’s 36-yard kickoff return, Mitch Stevenson rode a 4-of-4 streak passing, two to Kyler Harris and one each to Jeremiah Firth and Bogar, to a second-and-1 at the 22.

They’d get no further.

Stevenson overthrew a wide-open Harris in single coverage in the right corner of the end zone on second down. After another incompletion, the Roughers lined up in the apache (a split set) on fourth down. The play was slow in develping and Harris, taking the snap, ran to an open gap to his right which quickly closed and the measurement showed him inches short of sustaining the drive.

Jenks then went 78 yards to make it 21-0, Jenks quarterback Sawyer Kollmorgen throwing his third TD pass of the first half, a 34-yarder to Cory Jones. It would be one of four touchdowns for the running back, the other three by rush.

“That first pass (on second-and-1) was supposed to be a crossing route and on third down, I think Kyler had it over the middle and dropped it and then we had the play on fourth down. We haven’t run it that much this year and it was too slow to develop,” Hennesy said.

“You make mistakes against this team it will cost you every time. That’s the sign of a good team. For us, it’s another learning experience. And we’ve still got a chance at the playoffs.”

Yes, Muskogee (2-6, 2-4) remains in position to qualify for the postseason. Sand Springs beat Sapulpa 49-45 and with Claremore’s 24-0 loss to Broken Arrow, the Sandites are in command of fourth place at least for now. However, they must beat Jenks next week or the Roughers could gain the spot with a win at home against Tulsa Memorial.

Like Bartlesville the week before, the Roughers showed they could throw on Jenks. Stevenson was 13-of-28 for 297 yards and two TDs, 207 of those yards in the first half. Muskogee’s first score came on a 7-play, 80-yard march, with Bogar getting the TD on a 40-yard catch-and-run down the left sideline and the conversion on a run, making it 28-8. Stevenson connected with Cole Chapman on a 71-yard pass play on Muskogee’s first play of the second half, making it 49-15.

Stopping the Trojans (9-0, 6-0) became the problem.
