Fort Gibson gets dropped by Poteau

By Kyle Taylor

Phoenix Correspondent

POTEAU — Fort Gibson came into its matchup with Poteau off a disappointing 3-0 overtime loss to Muldrow last week.

That game was a defensive struggle for the most part as neither offense had a significant advantage.

Friday night started off nothing like that for the Tigers in a 27-6 loss to Poteau.

On the Tigers’ first possession, they would go down and get the early touchdown.

The drive took 4:29 off the clock and was capped by a 6-yard pass from Taylor Richey to Quinn Norman.

Poteau answered on its second possession when Garrett Klutts hit Charles Taylor for an 11-yard touchdown pass.

Despite being down 7-6 at the half, the defense was stout for Fort Gibson, as it held Poteau to just 104 yards of offense.

“We played hard,” said Tigers head coach Jeff Taylor. “I knew they were going to try and run the ball at us. We did a real good job at first.”

Offensively the Tigers couldn't muster much at all on the night.

Richey completed 8 of 18 passes for just 75 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Running backs Clay Baker and Ben Barker combined for only 35 yards on 17 carries.

“We just weren't getting the job done,” said Taylor. “They whipped us a little bit.”
