Area prep playoff picture begins to come into focus

Phoenix staff report

Ten area prep football teams are in and depending on Friday’s action, there could be an even dozen area teams that begin playoff action next week

Two, including Muskogee, have their spot secured and can scout a playoff game next week if they choose. Eight will clarify their positioning by virtue of what they do Friday, and among that mix, some crazy stuff could come out of at least one district race if the chips and the outcomes fall just right.

For an area-wide look at who stands where, read on. All first-round playoff games are scheduled to be played Friday, Nov. 14.

In, but what’s next?

Muskogee

6-3, 5-1 6A-3

Will finish second regardless of Friday’s outcome at Tulsa Memorial and face the 6A-4 third-place team, the Stillwater-Owasso loser, in the first round of the playoffs at Indian Bowl.

Wagoner

5-4, 4-2 4A-4

Finishes third and plays the 4A-3 runner-up, the Oologah-Collinsville winner, on the road.

Checotah

9-0, 6-0 3A-4

Wins District 3A-4 by beating Hugo (6-3, 5-1) and would face the 3A-3 fourth-place team, the Berryhill-Dewey winner. A loss coupled with a Metro Christian (7-2, 5-1) win would send the district title to a points tiebreaker. Checotah would need to lose by more than 11 or more to drop to second, having a 26-point advantage over Metro Christian and 51 over Hugo. Checotah cannot finish third.
