Bacone ends season today looking for second win

By Kenton Brooks
Phoenix Sports Writer

For the Bacone Warriors, the calendar has swept by quickly.

“It was just like yesterday when we were starting the season, and now we’re wrapping it up,” coach Lloyd Spotted Wolf said.

The Warriors conclude their season — the first under Spotted Wolf — at 2 p.m. today at Indian Bowl against Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Central States Football League action.

Both teams are 1-3 in the CSFL. Bacone brings a 1-7 overall record into the finale and the Lions of SAGU are 2-7. SAGU defeated Haskell Indian Nations University 38-14 last week for its only league win, while Bacone had the weekend off and its only league win was a 35-32 decision against Texas College on Oct. 10.

Spotted Wolf said his team is playing for pride and the seniors.

“We talked this week that we want to give them a taste of victory in their last college game,” he said.

The Warriors used the week off to rest and get players back healthy. Senior offensive lineman Brandon Welsh of Beggs will be on the field.

“He’s been hurt since training camp,” Spotted Wolf said. “He’s ready to go this week.”

However, quarterback Shawn Walls will be out with a cracked rib. The job will be split between Dylan Vaughn, Spencer Johnson and Matt Edmonds.

“Matt played quite a bit in our last two games and I expect he will this week as well,” Spotted Wolf said. “Who will start will be a game-time decision.”

Edmonds was the starting quarterback at Mustang High School when it beat Muskogee 48-44 in the 2005 Class 6A state semifinals.

Spotted Wolf can relate to the Lions’ woes this season.

“They’ve had the same problems we’ve had with coverages and tackling,” he said. “They’re also playing for their seniors. It should be a good contest.”
