Park Hill angler widens lead

GROVE – Jason Christie of Park Hill brought a five-bass limit to the scales Friday weighing 18 pounds, 14 ounces to extend his lead at the Walmart FLW Tour at Grand Lake.

Christie’s two-day cumulative weight of 40-10 gives him a 2 pound, 12 ounce lead over second-place pro Robbie Dodson of Harrison, Ark., who had a two-day weight of 10 bass worth 37-14 as the tournament heads into the third day of competition.

Norman North QB wins appeal

NORMAN – Norman North quarterback David Cornwell will be able to play at Norman North this season.

Cornwell’s attorney, Mitch McCuistian, called him a few minutes after 3 p.m. Friday informing him that he had been granted an extra semester of eligibility by the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association.

Cornwell, one of the top quarterback recruits nationally for the 2014 class, had to apply for the extra semester after missing the fall 2011 semester while his mother was ill.

The hardship was originally denied, leading to a Tuesday appeal in front of the board of directors.

OU, Arkansas players drafted

SECAUCUS, N.J. – Major League Baseball completed rounds 3-10 on Friday of its first-year player draft and two area college players were picked by National League clubs.

Arkansas pitcher Barrett Astin was taken with the 17th pick in the third round by the Milwaukee Brewers while Oklahoma first baseman Matt Oberste was grabbed with the 10th pick in the seventh round by the New York Mets.

This year, Astin pitched in 18 games, including 14 starts, and finished the year with a 4-4 record, one save and a 1.79 ERA Oberste leads the Sooners, who are playing LSU in the Super Regional, in batting average, hits and home runs.
