Prep softball roundup: FGHS captures Oologah title

It capped a pretty nice rivalry weekend for Fort Gibson.

Miranda Cherry doubled home two runs in the first and another two-bagger by Sydney Murray in the fifth helped the Class 4A No. 4 Lady Tigers to a 3-0 win over crosstown rival and top-ranked 4A Hilldale in pool play finals of the Oologah Tournament on Saturday.

Then, the icing on the cake came when Fort Gibson beat Chandler 2-0 in the finals. Madison Higley pitched a pair of five-hit, five-strikeout performances in the win.

Fort Gibson (22-4) has won nine straight games, eight played this week.

“Any chance you get to play the No. 1 team, be it Hilldale or not, it’s a fun opportunity. This just adds to it because the girls all know each other and play summer ball together,” FGHS coach Jaime Snyder said.

“Once we were to the finals, we figured we might as well win.  Seriously, it was great to not have a letdown after an emotional win.”

Destiny Riddle took the loss for Hilldale, which then beat Oologah 1-0 for third place to run its record to 24-3. Hillary Calvert broke up a scoreless tie in the sixth inning with her first home run of the season for the only run of the game. Riddle came back to get the win, losing a no-hitter with two outs in the seventh, striking out seven and improving to 19-2 on the season.

Against 3A No. 8 Chandler, Cherry’s fielder’s choice scored Mackenzie Williams, who doubled to start the threat, for a 1-0 lead in the first. In the fourth, Emilee Rigsby singled in Brooke Benham, who walked and later advanced to second.

Higley allowed four hits in a 1-0 loss to Hilldale on Aug. 29 at Fort Gibson. The two meet for a third time at Hilldale on Tuesday.
