Rougher lineman McGriff on visit to Naval Academy

— Dexter McGriff is now solidly on a Division I radar — a Naval radar.

The Muskogee High senior offensive lineman is in Annapolis, Md., this weekend, on a recruiting visit to the Naval Academy. McGriff had earlier committed to Central Oklahoma but got word of Navy’s offer from his mom and his head coach, Josh Blankenship.

“They called her and then coach messaged me about it.  We talked about it and I’m up here now,”  he said. “I like it — everyone, the atmosphere, the players, teachers, coaches.”

Blankenship said the three had a conference call.

“I told him he should take the visit no matter his interest level. ... a lifetime opportunity few get My middle brother took a visit there and he still talks about it to this day.”

McGriff said he’ll wait until he returns today and talks it over with his parents before making a decision. He added he had never considered a military academy but thinks it could play into a long-range career interest in “military-type work or the government.” To get there, he would have to serve five years in the Navy. His 3.75 grade-point average ranks him 24th at MHS.

McGriff would be the fourth area player to commit to a Division I school. Sequoyah quarterback Brayden Scott has signed with Memphis, Vian offensive lineman Rob Boyd has committed to Tulsa,  and Wagoner running back/defensive lineman Kerwin Thomas to Wyoming, though his recruiter is Jason Ray, who left Wyoming Jan. 24 to take the receivers job at Oklahoma State, leaving that commitment in question.

All commitments are non-binding until National Signing Day on Wednesday, except for Scott, who signed with Memphis in the fall signing period.
