Slow at first, fast at end for FGHS

Phoenix Staff Reports

— BROKEN BOW – The Fort Gibson Tigers took a little while to get going but once they did, they pulled away for a 42-7 win over Broken Bow in District 4A-4 action on Friday night.

The Tigers (4-1, 2-0) spread the ball around with relative ease.

Quarterback J.R. Singleton led all rushers with 77 yards on 11 carries and he also had the hot hand from the pocket in completing 11 of 15 passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns.

“The first quarter kind of went pretty quick,” Fort Gibson coach James Singleton said. “We had some success and got a little drive going, feeling them out. The second half we hit the pedal a little bit.”

Both touchdown passes were to Jordan London, for 26 and 36 yards

On the ground, Tristan Johnson got in on the scoring for the Tigers with a 32-yard touchdown run. Michael Richie added a 24-yard TD and Logan Wood capped the scoring with a 45-yard touchdown scamper.

Keifer Kirkhart returned a punt 49 yards for a Tigers’ touchdown

The lone Broken Bow touchdown came on Keyshawn Butler’s 39-yard run.

“We had a lot of production out of our fullbacks tonight, which was pretty big,” the Fort Gibson coach. “That’s something that has been lacking. Also, we got big play from special teams on a kickoff return.

“On the other side, our kickoff coverage was outstanding. The defense was solid. They’ve got a freshman tailback (Butler) who’s going to terrorize this district as he gets older.”

While the Tigers can celebrate their win, they know that the schedule doesn’t get any easier.

“I was proud of the kids,” the Tigers’ coach said. “We’ve been trying to put four quarters of football together and we felt like we did it tonight. We’ve got Poteau coming in next week and that’ll be a big, big game.”
