Bacone eliminated in NAIA tournament

SHAWNEE — Bacone’s bats were cooled and their season was put on ice one game shy of a NAIA Shawnee Bracket championship battle.

Nate Mullins’ sacrifice fly pushed across the go-ahead run in the sixth inning and Bellevue (Neb.) beat Bacone 2-1 in the semifinals Wednesday evening.

Kyle Kinman home run off losing pitcher Lucas Jones tied the game in with one out in the sixth. Charlie Krueger then tripled, setting up Mullins’ opportunity.

Bacone led 1-0 in the fourth on a three-bagger by Peter Rodriguez and Jean Ortiz’s double. The Warriors otherwise stranded 10 baserunners on six hits, leaving the bases loaded in the seventh and two on in the ninth in finishing 36-20. Bellevue (39-16-2) will play Oklahoma Baptist (52-6) today, needing a pair of wins to advance in the NAIA national tourney.

Bacone won 2-0 against Northwestern (Iowa) earlier in the day. The Warriors were outhit 6-4 but did the damage with a run in the third and a run in the sixth and a shutout effort by Michael Kirkland (3-2). Kirkland went the distance, walked one and struck out five. He retired the last seven batters he faced.

Jean Carlos Rodriguez fielder’s choice groundout in the third scored Torres, who drew a leadoff walk and was put in scoring position by a wild pitch, walk by Simms and a sacrifice bunt by Jonathan Vilella.

Three of Bacone’s hits came in the sixth when the Warriors made it 2-0 on Wagner’s two-on, one-out double down the left field line scoring Peter Rodriguez, who reached on a one-out single. Jean Carlos Rodriguez also singled in the inning.
