Roughers add assistant coach

New Muskogee football coach Rafe Watkins has secured one addition to his 2014 staff.

Joe Brown, the offensive coordinator at Liberty, was approved this week as a replacement for Brian Hobbs. Hobbs, an offensive assistant under former head coach Josh Blankenship, is taking a staff position at Broken Arrow.

Brown coached under Travis Hill at East Central as an offensive line coach.

“That’s where I know him from,” Watkins said. “I’m in a need for a wide receivers coach and his specialty is line but I know him from having coached against him when he was at a quality program like East Central which has similar type kids and skill levels as we do. I think he’s a good fit and he also is an exact fit for Hobbs’ teaching position.”

Still, it leaves Muskogee with two offensive line coaches. Jason Medrano was Blankenship’s offensive coordinator in name with emphasis on the line.

“I don’t think you can ever have enough eyes up front,” Watkins said. “We’ve still got one spot and I’m content to wait through the spring and into the summer to see what our exact needs might be. Coaches are coaches and we can move what we got around. I may wait a year before filling that and just go one short. We’ll see.”

Brown is also a Big 12 baseball umpire, Watkins said.
