Class B No. 1 Red Oak downs 3A No. 7 Eufaula

EUFAULA – Baseball is one of the sports that class size does not always mean the higher class school will win the game.

Eufaula, ranked No. 7 in Class 3A, hosted Red Oak, the No. 1 team in Class B, with the Eagles capturing a 7-1 victory.

“Give them credit, they’re a good team,” said Ironheads coach Victor Paden. “That and we came out a little flat and didn’t pressure them the way we should have.”

The two teams traded outs for the first 2 1/2 innings before the Ironheads (19-5) scored their lone run of the game. Colin Walch’s double drove home Dillon Larkin, who had singled and advanced to second on a walk to Alex Curits.

That was the extent of the Eufaula scoring, even though it had other chances.

“We couldn’t string enough hits together, and you can’t do that with a team like Red Oak,” Paden said.

Eufaula left runners on base in four different innings and had the bases loaded in the third and sixth innings, but only produced the one run in the third inning.

Larkin started on the mound for the Ironheads and took the loss, giving up nine hits, but also allowed four base on balls and hit three batters. Larkin appeared to be in control through the first three innings, allowing only two batters to reach base, but gave up two runs in the fourth inning, four runs in the fifth, and one run in the sixth.

“I gave up a few walks and then they started hitting the ball, and you can’t help a team as good as they are,” Larkin said.

The Eagles (23-4) touched Larkin for seven hits in the fourth through sixth innings with the big shots being a lead-off home run by Tyler Parks in the fifth and a homer by Brice Deatherage in the sixth inning.

Walch ended the day at the plate 1-for-3 with an RBI while Larkin was 1-for-1 with two fielder’s choices.

The Ironheads return to action at 4 p.m. today, traveling to Vian.
