All-State Day 1: Area golfers spark East win

Two  Fort Gibson Lady Tigers capped their careers in the same pool they won the school’s third consecutive Class 5A championship in.

Hannah Cantrell was fourth in the 50 freestyle (26.62 seconds) fifth in the 100 freestyle (59.70) and part of the runner-up 200 medley relay (2:01.46) and 200 free relay (1:46.45).

“It wasn’t my best performance, but it was a blast and a great memory,” said Cantrell, who is now headed for the swim team at Oklahoma Baptist University.

Hali Martin was fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:11.85) and second in the 400 freestyle relay (4:05.03) and third in the 200 freestyle relay (1:57:42) against her Lady Tiger teammate.

Martin hangs up the swimwear and trades it for a band uniform as she will attend UCO on a music scholarship.

“It’s difficult to think this is the end for me but it’s closing one door and starting something new,” she said. “I was in good enough shape to swim but other than that, it was one of the few times I really didn’t care about winning. Like they told us when we got here, this week is all about having fun.”

The West girls beat the East girls 61-31. The West boys won 58-33.

Wagoner’s Lateze Clayton was a late football add to the All-State East roster on Monday. He’ll join former Bulldog T.J. Ponds on the squad that plays Friday at Union-Tuttle Stadium.
