Cassie Mitchell, formerly of Warner, won gold in the women’s F52-53 (quadriplegic) shot put at the International Paralympic Committee Athletics World Championships in Lyon, France.
Mitchell, who now lives in Atlanta, set a meet record with a throw of 5.79 meters. Additionally she won a silver medal in the women’s 100-meter dash and two bronze medals in the women’s 800 and 200.
The IPC Athletics World Championships featured over 1000 athletes from nearly 100 countries.
Mitchell, who also graduated from Connors State and Oklahoma State, is the current quadriplegic world record shot putter. She is currently a research doctor in the Coulter department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology and an active wheelchair athletics team member for Shepherd Center, Atlanta.
