Top East seed MHS gets regional

No surprise —Muskogee’s girls are hosting a Class 6A regional basketball tournament.

The No. 2 Lady Roughers, owners of the top seed in the East, will play Moore (3-17) at 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21. Broken Arrow and Sapulpa, the other two teams in the region, will play at 6:30 p.m. The winners face off in a 1:30 p.m. game on Saturday, also at Ron Milam Gymnasium.

The Lady Roughers have faced Moore once this season, in the opening round of the John Nobles Tournament in Moore, and came away with a 71-38 win.

“I think all the regions are pretty evenly matched,” MHS coach Doyle Rowland said. “It’s not going to be a cakewalk for anyone.”

Muskogee is 3-1 against the region, having split with Sapulpa and defeated Broken Arrow in their only meeting. Those two teams play again on Monday. Tonight, the Lady Roughers get Jenks, the only other team to have defeated them this season. In that one, North Carolina-bound Jessica Washington scored 51 points, but half of that coming from the free-throw line.

Since that contest, MHS has won 12 straight heading into tonight. Of that only four games have come away from either MHS or the Muskogee Civic Center.

“There’s a lot of motivation for us there,” Rowland said. “We kind of want to prove something there, and also that we can win on the road. That’s the key now.”

Muskogee’s remaining schedule (at Broken Arrow on Monday, Bixby Feb. 12 and Union Feb. 15) are on the road.

The Muskogee region winner will play the winner of the Tulsa Washington regional that includes Washington-Ponca City and Enid-Mustang first-round matchups. The runner-ups from both regionals will go into a consolation round against each other with the winner getting the loser from the game featuring the other two regionals at Bartlesville and Bixby.

Muskogee’s boys squad will hit the road.

The Roughers (8-11) are in the Stillwater regional and face No. 12  Union (11-8) in a 6:30 p.m. tipoff on Feb. 22. No. 7 Stillwater gets Tulsa Hale in the late game, with the winners facing at 7 p.m.  Saturday.

Union beat Muskogee 51-46 at Ron Milam Gymnasium. The two teams meet again Feb. 15.

In Class 5A, Tahlequah’s girls, 12-8 and ranked No. 7, are repeat regional hosts and play Coweta at 8 p.m. Feb. 21. Win and the Lady Tigers get the survivor between Guthrie and Chickasha.

Tahlequah’s boys (7-12) go to Coweta and get Chickasha in a first-round game Friday, Feb. 22. The winner meets the Coweta-Grove winner at 7 p.m. Feb. 23.

4A-2A brackets were finalized and posted Thursday. Hilldale and Fort Gibson  play at Inola and Jay, respectively, in districts on Saturday, Feb. 16. The lone hosts in districts are Sequoyah, Eufaula and Keys in 3A and Oktaha in 2A. Fort Gibson hosts its regional and stays close to home should it advance to area, which is at Muskogee Civic Center.

All district matchups involving area teams follow.
