CONNORS SPLITS — The Cowboys went 1-1 in the USA Baseball Invitational at Millington, Tenn., on Sunday, losing to Ellsworth (Ill.) 6-5 in 10 innings when they misplayed a bunt and came back to roll over Shawnee (Ill.) College 12-1.
Cowboys struck for six runs in the third inning against Shawnee to put it away early. Eli Roundtree (2-for-3) connected for his first home run of the season, a two-run blast giving Connors a 4-0 lead. Warner grad Korey Keith also had an RBI single. Sawyer Barnard started on the mound for Connors, going four innings and was the pitcher of record. He struck out eight, allowing just two hits. Zayne Dougan came on in relief, going two innings, striking out two.
All six runs against Ellsworth were unearned.
Connors is now 3-1 for the young season and returns for its home opener on Wednesday, playing a doubleheader against Bacone JV at 2 p.m.
NSU 7-11, NW MISSOURI 2-8 — In the opener, Manual Marmol and senior designated hitter Jordan Dallalio blasted home runs on back-to-back pitches in the fourth. Kegan Knight finished 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI and two runs scored, while Kyle Singleton recorded four RBIs. Craig George (1-0) tossed 5.0 innings and earned the win.
In the second game, Chad Davidson got NSU back in the game with a three-run home run in the third after NWMSU scored the first five runs. Marmol tied the game with a two-RBI triple to right center in the fourth, and Knight’s single in the inning gave NSU the lead.
Singeton added a solo shot in the sixth. Davidson led NSU with three RBI and both Singleton and Marmol had three hits. Frank Sprick (1-0) threw 2 1/3 innings behind Eufaula grad Trevor Walch and earned the win. He did not allow a run and only allowed one hit.
Northeastern State will travel to Emporia, Kan., for a midweek doubleheader with Emporia State beginning at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
OKLAHOMA 7, HOFSTRA 4 — Junior infielder Matt Oberste hit a walk-off three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, the second consecutive dramatic finish for the Sooners (4-0), who beat the Pride (0-4), 11-10, in 11 innings Saturday night in the second game of a doubleheader.
Oberste's shot negated a Hofstra rally in which the Pride scored three runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 4-4. Oklahoma hosts Arkansas Pine Bluff Tuesday and Wednesday at L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman. First pitch for both games is 3 p.m.
NEW MEXICO 9, OSU 1 — The Cowboys (2-1) managed just four hits in the contest, with Tanner Krietemeier’s 3-for-4 effort leading the way, while New Mexico collected 14 hits off a trio of OSU pitchers. Phillip Wilson lasted just 1/3 of an inning as the Lobos tagged the right-hander for five runs, three of them earned, on four hits to take a 5-0 lead after one. OSU’s home opener is 4 p.m. Tuesday against Alcorn State.
W. ILLINOIS 7, ARKANSAS 5 — Arkansas fell short of a sweep of the three-game series at Fayetteville, Ark. Trent Daniel (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up six runs, only three of which were earned, on eight hits and striking out two in 3 1/3 nnings. Joe Serrano and Tyler Spoon each had three hits to lead the Razorbacks at the plate. Arkansas plays next on Tuesday when the Razorbacks welcome New Orleans. First pitch is 3:05 p.m.
ORU 5, ST. LOUIS 0 — Tim Zufall threw seven shutout innings and struck out a batter in the victory for ORU (1-2)
GRACELAND 6-1, BACONE 5-3 — Bacone (7-5) split a doubleheader at home, losing the opener as a six-run sixth erased a 2-0 lead. Anthony Seabolt led Bacone at the plate, going 2-for-3. Enrique Meza drove in three runs. Porter grad Cody McBride (1-1) threw 1/3 of an inning, allowing three runs, two earned, and took the loss.
Tony Mendea was 2-for-2 and he along with Kyle Pietryga and Steven Smith each drove in runs in the second game. Bacone had five hits while Eric Aguillard and Allen Rimer combined on a two-hitter. Rimer gave up one run and one hit in two innings of relief.
TULSA 4, FLORIDA STATE 1 — Aimee Creger tallied 11 strikeouts in the circle and junior outfielder Haley Henshaw hit a two-run home run for Tulsa (4-1).
OSU 4, IOWA 3 — Samantha Chrisman had a solo home run and drove in three runs in a win in the Lovelace Invitational, hosted by North Texas. OSU moved to 5-4.
OU 7, NOTRE DAME 5 — Facing just its third deficit of the season, Oklahoma scored one run in the top of the seventh to force extras, then broke the game open with a four-run ninth inning to improve to 10-0 on the season in San Diego.
