Area ladies take a silver medal at Senior Olympics

Two area women were part of a silver medalist team in the Senior Olympics basketball tournament held in Cleveland July 24-27.

Nancy Harrold of Fort Gibson and June Rodgers of Oktaha joined three Tulsa women — June Combs, Moniker Frampton and JoAnn Murray — in a 3-on-3 competition in the 70-74 age bracket. Known as the Oklahoma Thrillers, they won four of seven games, losing a tiebreaker in their pool and took second in the Double A division to California.

Michigan, a team they beat in pool play, lost in the Triple A championship game to Tennessee.

The team is feeling it this year.

“California beat us on the court the first time and we forfeited to them the second time,” said Harrold, a former coach at Muskogee High. “We had the silver and I had gone to the emergency room after getting tripped and falling on my head. One of our other ladies was also injured.

“It’s the first time I’ve ever been part of a forfeit at any level. I didn’t like it but we just couldn’t go. It was a really physical team we played in that California team.

It’s the second silver medal for the group, which has also had a pair of fifth-place finishes. Rodgers is the veteran of the group, having participated in the event 19 years.

“This year the refs were calling a game suitable for men that women shouldn’t be playing,” Rodgers said.

But they plan on going back for more.

“In two years it’s in Minnesota and we’ll move to the 75-79 age group,” Rodgers said. “We’re going to keep playing ‘til we can’t play.”
