Area anglers in contention

DAYTON, Tenn.  — Jacob Wheeler put all his experience to work Thursday, BASSfest’s second day. He weighed in 29 pounds, 13 ounces for a two-day total of 52-3, banking a lead of 6 pounds, 12 ounces against Bassmaster Elite Series pro Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich.

David Smith of Del City is the top Oklahoman at 38-5. Jason Christie of Park Hill is 15th (36-6) and Tommy Biffle of Wagoner is 17th (36-1). All will with the rest of the top 50 sit out a day while the other 90 anglers go into a shootout on Nickajack Lake on Friday. The 10 survivors of that will rejoin the 50 on Saturday. That list will be trimmed to 12 for Sunday’s finals.
