Oktaha grad gets Detroit FA deal

Phoenix staff report

— Former Oktaha High pitcher Cale Elam didn’t hear his name called in the Major League Baseball draft last weekend.

But the former two-time Phoenix Male Athlete of the Year isn’t out of baseball options, not after agreeing to a free agent deal with the Detroit Tigers on Thursday. He’ll report today to the Tigers’ rookie squad location in Lakeland, Fla.

Elam just wrapped up his senior season at Wichita State. He was a freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball and 24-12 career on the mound as a Shocker. He worked as a reliever his first two seasons, appearing in 54 games, then was 14-7 over the final two years. As a senior, he posted a 7-2 mark with a 2.22 ERA with 71 strikeouts in 89 innings, the second-most wins on the staff.

Elam was a member of one Oktaha state championship team in baseball and also excelled in basketball and golf.
