Two area swimmers bound for state event

Two area swimmers have qualified for state competition this weekend and one of those will continue in a higher level the following weekend.

Klair Bradley, 10, a fifth grader at Sadler Elementary and the daughter of Carter and Karen Bradley, and Meredith Stevenson, 10, a fifth grader at Harris Jobe and the daughter of Michael and Kelli Stevenson, will compete in the USA Swimming state championship at Oklahoma City Community College Friday through Sunday.

Bradley will compete in all-events after qualifying in the 100-meter freestyle, the 50 and 100 butterfly, the 50 backstroke, 200 freestyle, 50 and 100 breaststrokes and 200 individual medley. Her time in the 100 breast, a 1 minute, 35:48 seconds effort in June in Oklahoma City, is the fastest this year and the best time in the 10-and-under boys or girls since 2009.

Stevenson qualified in the 200 individual medley, 50, 100 and 200 freestyles, 50 and 100 backstroke and 50 and 100 butterfly.

Bradley swims for Swim Tulsa. Stevenson is working out with Swim Tulsa but will compete this weekend unattached.

The weekend following state, Bradley will compete on Team Oklahoma in the USA Swimming Zone championship, also in Oklahoma City. Her 100 breast time earned her a spot. She also will compete there in the 50 breast and on relay teams. Six from Oklahoma have qualified for that and competitors this weekend have a chance to be added to that roster, which will compete against swimmers from Arkansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
