Phoenix staff report
Perry Keith’s 13th Heartland Tournament gets under way tonight at three locations with a 12-team field competing.
Hilldale and Warner’s high school summer teams will be joined by 10 teams picked by draft and identified by the colors of their shirts.
Typically, the tournament has had an international flavor with the Ontario Blue Jays select team as part of the event. The Jays missed last year’s event and have done so again this year, due to other commitments.
Keith, the Connors State College coach, said he’s working on getting a team from Puerto Rico here next year.
Locals on the drafted teams are as follows:
Purple – Oktaha pitcher Jordan Webb, who graduated in May.
Navy – Hilldale pitcher Hunter Harrison, Eufaula pitcher Trey Moore and Checotah pitcher/outfielder Jack Christian. Harrison graduated this past spring and Moore is a senior-to-be. Christian will be a junior.
Black – Oktaha catcher Brent Keys, a sophomore to-be.
Gold – Porum infielder/pitcher Tyler Barnes, an incoming senior, Tahlequah sophomore outfielder Treton Osburn and Porter graduate pitcher/third baseman Colby Stockton. Okay’s Chad Clark is coaching the gold.
White/Black – Tahlequah senior catcher/pitcher Austin Riley, graduated Warner first baseman Tim Smithson and graduated Vian outfielder Warren Zachary.
Maroon – Vian graduated third baseman/pitcher Hunter Holt and incoming freshman Graylen Fletcher, a catcher/infielder.
Red – Muskogee pitcher/infielder Ethan Barton, who graduated in May.
Royal – Otkaha catcher/pitcher Kasey Gritts, a sophomore, and Porter infielder/pitcher Nicholas Jenkins, a sophomore.
White/Red – Tahlequah junior second baseman/outfielder Jess Brown.
The schedule has pool play starting tonight with Hilldale, White/Black, White/Red, Red, Purple and Gold in Pool A and Warner, Navy, Orange, Black, Royal and Maroon in Pool B.
