Tonkawa’s two-minute drill stuns Connors

TONKAWA –Ronnie Boyce and Willie Atwood scored 28 and 23 points respectively, but it wasn’t enough as Northern Oklahoma Tonkawa came from behind to stun Connors State 78-74 in an Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference clash Thursday night at Piper Foster Field House.

Connors led throughout the ball game, including 35-33 at the half, before the Mavericks overtook the Cowboys in the final two minutes of play.

The Cowboys are now 20-6 for the season and 11-5 in OCAC play, while the Mavericks are 16-12 and 8-8. The loss  drops Connors out of the OCAC lead as NOC-Enid defeated Carl Albert 101-61. The Jets are now 21-6 on the year and 12-5 in OCAC play to move into first place by one-half game.

The Cowboys’ Devante Robinson also scored in double figures with 12 points.

The Mavericks’ scoring was led by Simeon Dennis with 24 points while Contrael Colbert added 19 and C.J. Rodriquez dropped 13 more.

Tulsa 71, FAU 52

BOCA RATON, Fla.  — Rashad Smith scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds and James Woodard added 19 points as Tulsa defeated Florida Atlantic 71-52 on Thursday night.

Tulsa shot out to a 34-18 lead at halftime, shooting 41.2 percent to FAU’s 25 percent. The Golden Hurricane kept their double-digit lead in the second half and led by as many as 26 points with 3:38 to go. Tulsa finished at 47.5 percent shooting while holding FAU to 31.3 percent, the ninth straight opponent the Golden Hurricane have held under 40 percent.

Tulsa (14-12, 9-3 Conference USA) has won four consecutive games and 10 of their last 13.

D’Andre Johnson scored 12 points, Justin Raffington scored 10 and added nine rebounds while Marquan Botley scored 11 points for the Owls (10-17, 5-7).

Tulsa outrebounded FAU 42-32 with the Golden Hurricane grabbing 12 on the offensive boards and holding a 44-18 scoring advantage in the paint.


Northern (Tonkawa) 79, Connors 59

TONKAWA — The Lady Mavericks (12-16, 11-5) held a 42-28 lead at the half and was never contested the reset of the way, as Jamee Moore lead the Lady Mavericks scoring with 20 points.

Destinee Thrash, who scored 16 points, led Connors (5-20, 2-14). Lauren Godfrey added 13 and Mari Jackson 10.

Connors will return home Monday to play Murray State in the home finale at Melvin Self Fieldhouse. Tip-off is 6 p.m.
