Thunderbird Speedway moves races to Saturday

— Thunderbird Speedway moves its night of racing to Saturday this week.

Dennis Slader, the track’s public relations director, said the move was made to accommodate those who can’t get off work in time on Fridays to attend or compete in the races.

“We’re trying  Saturday because we’ve had people say it’s easier for them,” he said. “This is their opportunity to come here.”

Slader said it’s not a permanent move to change the racing dates.

“We’ll see how it goes,” he said. “We want to get our fan and car count up a little bit.”

Racing starts at 7:30 p.m. 360 Modified, similar to the Modified Division but the cars have smaller motors, will be raced for the first this season. The other divisions include Super Stock, Modified, Sport Modified and Street Stock.

Slader said Thunderbird has received a permit to repair the roof over the grandstands and a smaller track to be used for mini-sprints and four-wheelers will be built inside the main track.

“We want to get the smaller track done in three to four weeks,” he said.

Thunderbird Speedway didn’t race last week because of a wet track. The dirt oval is located at the Muskogee Fairgrounds. The re-opening was delayed for two weeks because of rain and the first week of competition was on April 9.
