Quick start by Roughers runs into rain

Phoenix staff report

— Muskogee’s hot start was thwarted by the rain Thursday in the Class 6A regional at Union.

The Roughers jumped to a 6-3 lead against the host Redskins, scoring five runs in the first inning, and were at bat in the bottom of the second when the game was stopped. It will resume at 1 p.m. today and the winner will then meet Broken Arrow in the winner’s bracket final immediately following. The loser gets Sapulpa at 6 p.m.

Tony Horn’s two-run double, a two-run single by Ethan Barton and a sacrifice fly by Dakota Morse accounted for the first-inning outburst.

Barton allowed one earned run in two innings. Coach Jeremy Griffin isn’t certain if Barton will return to the mound if the game is resumed.

“It was a great start. We had a great approach at the plate and unfortunately we have to go back and resume it and hopefully pick up where we left off,” Griffin said.

The winner of the 6 p.m. game will play the loser of the 3 p.m. game at 1 p.m. Saturday with the survivor having to beat the remaining unbeaten twice.
