Fort Gibson sweeps Jay in districts

The Fort Gibson Tigers raced out to a 19-point lead after the first quarter and never looked back in capturing an 87-59 Class 4A Area IV district championship over Jay at Jay on Saturday night.

The Tigers (20-3) opened up with a 29-10 advantage after the first eight minutes and led 48-31 at the half.

“We shot the ball real well early,” said Fort Gibson coach Gary Hendrix. “We pressed them early, forcing some turnovers which led to easy baskets.”

Jordan Hill led Fort Gibson with a game-high 43 points while Jordan London finished 14 points and Zack Lindley had 10 points.

“It feels real good to get to 20 wins,” Hendrix said. “Jordan (Hill) made some perimeter shots early on and got out on the fast break. Our guys made some real good decisions with their passing which also leads to easy baskets.”

The Tigers return home for regionals and will host Stilwell on Thursday at 8 p.m.

The Fort Gibson girls made it a sweep, racing out to a 46-11 halftime advantage en route to a 76-42 over Jay to remain undefeated at 23-0.

Fort Gibson led 20-6 at the end of the first quarter and went into cruise control by outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 26-5 in the second quarter for the 35-point lead heading into the locker room.

“Our defensive intensity was very good from the start,” said Fort Gibson coach Jerry Walker. “We also moved the ball around very well on offense. The girls showed they’re playoff ready.”

Allie Glover led the Lady Tigers with 16 points while Jayme Hill added 10 points.

“(Jay) tried to take away our inside game,” Walker said. “We were able to find the open shot by our ball movement.”

Fort Gibson faces Poteau at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Fort Gibson in the regional semifinals with the winner advancing to the area tournament. Jay meets Stilwell in Fort Gibson in a consolation round game at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
