Indian Bowl field gets name

Indian Bowl will have a new name this fall — or part of it.

Muskogee school board Tuesday night approved a five-year deal worth $75,000 to name the playing field Creek Nation Field.  The deal is similar to that which Northeastern State has (Gable Field, Doc Wadley Stadium) or the University of Oklahoma (Owen Field, Gaylord Family Memorial Stadium).

“Two years ago with the OSSAA rule changes we understood high schools could begin advertising on their field,” said Muskogee head football coach Josh Blankenship, who helped spearhead the naming effort. “For us we were kind of in a different boat  because with Bacone using it, NAIA rules don’t allow that.”

So instead of advertising on the field surface, naming rights were allowed.  Creek Nation, he said  beat out one other finalist.

The money will be spread out by percentage to all MHS programs using it.

NSU picked third in soccer

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The Northeastern State women’s soccer team was picked to finish third in the 2013 MIAA Preseason Coaches’ Poll released Tuesday morning.

The RiverHawks (13-5-1, 7-4-1 MIAA) finished the 2012 season after progressing to the semifinals of the MIAA Conference Championship, where they fell to No. 12-ranked University of Central Missouri 1-0. The 13 wins tied the school record, and the .711 winning percentage was the best in school history.

NSU will return seven starters from that squad, including leading goal scorers’ junior midfielder Elizabeth Cudjoe and sophomore forward Lindsey Latta. Cudjoe was an all-region performer and an All-MIAA First Teamer, and Latta was named to the All-MIAA Honorable Mention team.

The RiverHawks were slotted to finish behind nationally ranked teams Central Missouri (No. 23), voted number one, and Central Oklahoma (No. 23), voted number two by the MIAA coaches.

Northeastern State will kick off its 2013 campaign with a home exhibition match against Oklahoma Baptist slated for 7 p.m. August 30 at Dr. Dan DeLoache Field.
