The Bacone Warriors football team received good news on Monday when they appeared in the No. 25 spot in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics coaches poll.
The Warriors received 22 votes and trail No. 24 St. Francis (Ill.) by three votes. Bacone is the first team from the Central States Football League to receive a Top-25 mention since Langston in the preseason poll.
“Last year, we were No. 23 in the last week and we knew if we won our final game, we were in the postseason,” said Bacone coach Trevor Rubly. “We didn’t and we missed out. Here we are again and it’s great to have right now. But it still means we have to win our conference to achieve one of our goals of making the psotseason.”
Bacone (5-2, 1-0) travels to face Texas College at 2 p.m. Saturday.
The Warriors also had two players recognized by the CSFL for its weekly honors. Quarterback Kyle Kuban and defensive back Erik King were named the league’s offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for their playing during Bacone’s 47-9 win over Panhandle State last Saturday.
Kuban threw for 253 yards and two touchdowns and scored twice on the ground. King returned an interception for 100 yards in the win in addition to recording six tackles, including four solo stops.
