NSU’s Lewis is MIAA first team



KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Northeastern State’s Taylor Lewis was named the MIAA Women’s Basketball Co-Player of the Year, the league announced today.

The senior guard from Broken Arrow  joined Washburn’s Laura Kinderknecht as the league’s top two players. Lewis was also a unanimous selection to the All-MIAA First Team.

She was joined on the first team by Kinderknecht, Central Missouri’s Keauna Flax, Pittsburg State’s Lizzy Jeronimus, and Fort Hays State’s Kate Lehman.

Lewis is second in the league in scoring at 16.6 points per game and has reached double figures in all but two games.  She also averaged 18.1 ppg during league contests. She leads the entire MIAA and is seventh in the nation in free-throw percentage (.893), three-point field goal percentage (.432) and three-point field goals made per game (3.2).

Senior guard Tosha Tyler and senior forward Sarah Green were both named All-MIAA Honorable Mention, and junior forward Carrington Fox was named to the All-Defensive Team.

NSU has the No. 3 seed in the MIAA Tournament and begins play at 8:15 p.m. Friday against either Fort Hays State or Lincoln at Kansas City, Mo.

Northeastern State has earned the No. 3 seed in the 2013 MIAA Women’s Basketball Championship and will begin tournament play in the quarterfinals at 8:15 p.m. March 8 inside Kansas City’s Municipal Auditorium. The RiverHawks will meet either No. 6 Fort Hays State or No. 11 Lincoln.



Thunder to play overseas in fall



The Oklahoma City Thunder will open a series of eight overseas preseason NBA games this fall by playing Turkish team Fenerbahce on Oct. 5 in Istanbul. The Philadelphia 76ers follow a day later against Uxue Bilbao in Spain. The Thunder and 76ers then meet on Oct. 8 in Manchester, England.

The Houston Rockets and Indiana Pacers will meet on Oct. 10 in Manila, Philippines, and again on Oct. 13 in Taipei, Taiwan. Also in Asia, the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers will play each other on Oct. 15 in Beijing and then again three days later in Shanghai.

In South America, the Chicago Bulls will play the Washington Wizards on Oct. 12 in Rio de Janeiro.

Thunder’s Ibaka fined for incident



Oklahoma City forward Serge Ibaka has been fined $25,000 by the NBA for striking Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers in the groin area during Sunday’s game.

The incident occurred with 1:52 remaining in the fourth quarter of the Thunder’s 108-104 win over the Clippers at Staples Center.



Missouri routs Razorbacks



COLUMBIA, Mo. — BJ Young scored 27 points, but an inspired performance on senior night led Missouri to a 93-63 victory at Mizzou Arena.

Arkansas (18-12, 9-8 SEC) also got nine-point games from juniors Marshawn Powell and Coty Clarke while Missouri (22-7, 11-5 SEC) picked up a game high 24 points from senior Laurence Bowers.
