OU pitcher gets league kudos

NORMAN — Oklahoma senior Keilani Ricketts dominated the competition at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic last weekend and has earned Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honors for her efforts, the conference announced Tuesday.

In posting a 3-0 record, Ricketts did not allow a single run in 23.1 innings of work, including 21.0 innings against teams ranked or receiving votes. She struck out 34 batters and gave up just five hits to go with three walks allowed as the No. 1 Oklahoma softball team went 5-0 over the weekend to improve to 15-0 on the year.

Ricketts has been named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week 13 times in her career, including the initial honors in 2013. Along with Michelle Gascoigne last week, the Sooners have taken home all three Big 12 Pitcher of the Week accolades this season.

Big 12 erred in KU-Iowa St.

The Big 12 Conference has admitted that “officiating errors” were made late in Kansas’ controversial victory over Iowa State on Monday.

The officials did not make a block or charge call when Jayhawks guard Elijah Johnson collided with Iowa State’s Georges Niang, who appeared to have his feet set, with five seconds remaining.

Instead, Niang was whistled for a holding foul after Johnson’s shot missed and the ball came loose on the floor. Johnson went to the free throw line and made the two free throws, forcing overtime and helping the sixth-ranked Jayhawks rally for a 108-96 victory.

“The Big 12 Conference acknowledges that officiating errors were made at the end of regulation during last night’s Kansas at Iowa State men’s basketball game,” the conference said in a statement released Tuesday. “The plays have been reviewed and appropriate measures will be taken by the Coordinator of Men’s Basketball Officials to adjust the number of future assignments for the two officials involved in conjunction with Conference policies.”

Monday’s officials were Tom O’Neill, Mark Whitehead and Bert Smith. The Big 12 did not identify the officials or the plays in question.
