Area seniors get last chance to shine

The All-State games are a chance for high school seniors' one last moment in the sun. For soccer players, that occurred Thursday when the Class 4A All-State boys and girls soccer games were played at Newcastle High School.

On the girls’ side, Lillian Bear, Kyndra Johnson and Taylor Sparks of Fort Gibson, Caitlynn Morgan from Hilldale and Rebecca Tillman of Wagoner earned the honor of participating on the East team. The area representatives on the boys’ East team were Austin Ford and Trent Brown of Fort Gibson and Chris Ramey of Hilldale.

The East boys got out to a 2-0 lead on the West squad and held on for a 2-1 win. Ford recorded an assist off a corner kick for what proved to be the game-winning goal.

“Our kids were playing were playing with the best seniors in the state,” said Fort Gibson boys coach Todd Friend. “They showed everyone that soccer in this area is a force to be reckoned with.”

The East girls fell into a 3-0 hole at halftime and could not get out, losing to the West 4-2. Bear scored the East’s second goal coming with 20 minutes left in the second half while Johnson was the East’s goalkeeper.

“They all played well,” said Fort Gibson girls coach Jaime Snyder who also coached the East squad. “They were a great group of girls to coach. Everyone represented their school very well. This was a proud moment for them.”

The Class 5A games are tonight while the 6A games are Saturday. All games will be played at Newcastle High School with the girls’ games kicking off at 6 p.m. while boys’ games get started at 8 p.m.
