Bacone’s slump ends at Paul Quinn

A last second tip-in by Bacone’s Jeremy McClain propelled the Warriors past the Paul Quinn Tigers 80-78 Thursday night, snapping their eight-game losing skid.

Leading by at two the break the Warriors pushed their lead to 14 at 45-31 with 16:06 remaining in the game after Creed Flowers knocked down two free throws, but the Tigers would not go quietly into the night.

Paul Quinn managed to tie the game at 78-78 with eight seconds left, giving Bacone the final possession. Guard Derrick Thomas drove in but his attempt bounced off the rim, luckily into the hands of McClain who scored as time expired.

For the game Bacone hit 46 percent (34 of 73) and went seven of 16 from the charity stripe; the Tigers hit 40 percent (31 of 76) and connected on 12 of 20 free throw tries.

Thomas led a quintet of scorers for Bacone with 21, McClain finished with 11 while Christian Smith, Creed Flowers and Roland Barbaza chipped in 17, 12 and 10 respectively; Smith also led in boards at 12.

Paul Quinn’s Myron Dempsey led all scorers with 35.

Bacone (2-11, 0-7) hits the road to face Huston-Tillotson on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.; they return home on Jan. 19 against Wiley College.
