MIAA spring sports picks out

RiverHawks 11th in baseball poll

KANSAS CITY, Mo. –  Northeastern State is 11th and three-time defending MIAA Champion and NCAA Division II South Central Regional qualifier Central Missouri was selected as a unanimous preseason No. 1 in the 2013 MIAA baseball coaches poll released Wednesday.

The Mules received 14 possible first-place votes coming off a year where they made the South Central Regional, falling in the regional championship. The Mules, who finished 48-9 last season are ranked #4 in this season’s ABCA preseason poll.Missouri Western, who finished last season 34-17, is second, getting UCM’s first-place vote.  They are followed by Emporia State.

Central Oklahoma, in their first year as members of the MIAA, was picked fourth ahead of Fort Hays State, and Missouri Southern. Washburn is seventh, followed in order by Lindenwood, Pittsburg State, Northwest Missouri, NSU, Nebraska-Kearney, Southwest Baptist, Truman and Lincoln.

The season begins for NSU on Feb. 16 at home against Northwest Missouri State.



NSU softball voted ninth

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Northeastern State is ninth and defending MIAA regular season and tournament champion Emporia State has been picked No. 1 in the MIAA preseason softball poll announced Wednesday.

The Hornets, who received 12 first-place votes, went 42-11 last season and undefeated in MIAA play. ESU advanced to their ninth straight NCAA Division II South Central Regional where they fell in the regional championships. Their opponent in that game, Central Oklahoma, earns the No. 2 spot as well as taking three first place votes. Missouri Western is third.

Fort Hays State is ahead of Pittsburg State with Central Missouri sixth, followed by Washburn, Northwest Missouri then NSU. Trailing the RiverHawks, in order, are Nebraska-Kearney, Missouri Southern, Truman, Lindenwood, Lincoln and Southwest Baptist.

NSU opens the season Feb. 8 in tournament play at Durant against Arkansas Tech.
