Phoenix staff report
At the beginning of the season, the Bacone Warriors circled their game with Langston at 2 p.m. today today as one of the crucial games in their quest for the Central States League championship and a postseason berth.
The Warriors (7-2) and Lions (4-4) are both 3-0 in CSFL play. Should the Warriors win, and Southwest Assemblies of God lose today at Texas College, then Bacone would claim the league title. Wins by both Bacone and SAGU would mean the Warriors would have to win at SAGU next Saturday.
The Lions started off the season with four losses, all to NCAA Division I FCS schools. Since then, the Lions have rattled off four straight wins including a 20-19 squeaker at Panhandle State last Saturday.
Langston feature a balanced attack on offense and the numbers show it. The Lions are averaging 142.63 yards rushing and 195.88 yards in the air.
Kievon Jackson leads four Lions who are averaging 25 yards per game with 42.4 yards per outing. Quarterback Mark Wright Jr. has accounted 76 percent of the Lions’ production in the air, completing 88 of 138 attempts for 149.8 yards per outing and six touchdowns.
On the other side of the field, the Warriors are No. 9 in the NAIA in passing offense, averaging 294.2 yards per game. David Chapman is eighth in the NAIA in receiving yards per outing (99.2) while quarterback Karl Birkenfield is 12th in the nation is passing efficiency (145.8)
