— Muskogee had its highest finish in at least a decade, finishing third at the Class 6A regional tennis tournament Monday at  Shadow Mountain Tennis Club in Tulsa and qualify as a team for the state tournament for the fourth time in five years.

The Lady Roughers were third behind Bishop Kelley and Union.

Freshman Abby Wayman was fourth in No. 1 singles, beating Tiara Travis from Midwest City 6-1, 6-0 and Juli Zhu from Norman North 6-1, 6-0. She lost to the regional champion, Madison Westby of Bishop Kelley 6-0, 6-0 and fell to Lily Geerts of Bartlesville 6-2, 6-1 in the third-place match.

Freshman Claire Farmer also was fourth and like Wayman, was knocked off by the eventual regional champion in the second round. Mallory Brookover of Bishop Kelly took a 6-0, 6-1 decision. Farmer started off with a win over Rose Cela Jimenez of Tulsa Hale 6-0, 6-0. She also beat Kaliegh Dean of Midwest City 6-2, 6-2 and lost to Megan Turcotte of Bartlesville 6-1, 6-1.

Both doubles pairs from Muskogee took third, Alexis Rosson and Kaliegha Fields opened with a loss to Bishop Kelley’s Madeline Hall and Caroline Reynolds 6-0, 6-0 and then won three straight, capping it with a three-set win over Norman North’s Caitlin Fields and Carol Fodra. Rosson is a junior and Kaliegha Fields a senior.

In No. 2 doubles, Laura Jardine and Sierra Sanders lost a second-round match to the eventual runner-ups from Union and won third by beating Bartlesville 6-1, 6-7, 6-0. Both doubles pairs were 3-1 on the day. Jardine is a junior and Fields is a senior.

“It’s the highest finish I can recall in years and the best thing is we’re doing this with two freshmen in singles and just two seniors,” MHS coach Clay Blevins said.

The state tournament is at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center on Friday and Saturday.
