Defending champs out: After KO of Fort Gibson, Stilwell shuts state door on Hilldale

(Continued)

Stilwell 5, Fort Gibson 1

The Tigers saw their seven-game winning streak end on Thursday and their season come to a close on Friday.

Fort Gibson (15-16) managed only one hit in the first five innings and that came courtesy of Zach Drain to lead off the first inning.

As the Indians (28-8) were putting up a single run in the third and two runs each in the fourth and fifth, the Tigers put their only run of the game in the sixth on a fielder’s choice by Brayden Williams. Fort Gibson was looking to add more runs in the inning when it loaded the bases with one out but Stilwell’s A.J. Deason got Tyler Stach to pop up to shortstop and Colton Dorris to ground out second to first.

“We made some errors early and that’s been kind of our story this season,” said Fort Gibson coach Randy Smith. “We just didn’t hit the ball like we should.”

Tristan Johnson started on the mound for the Tigers and finished the game surrendering four earned runs with four walks and two strikeouts.

“Tristan struggled all day,” Smith said. “It’s hard when you’re pulling tarp and hauling dirt. I’m not making excuses and when you’re the host team, you’ve go to be able to do that. You’ve got to be able to work through it.”
