Applying the sting: Hornets wallop Westville, await playoff destiny

— WESTVILLE – After watching his Hilldale Hornets notch a 54-0 whitewashing of the Westville Yellowjackets at Akin-Langley Field on Thursday night, coach Chad Kirkhart knows either Roland or Spiro is next, in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs.

When is the question.

It all depends on the outcome of the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association board meeting in Oklahoma City on Wednesday which will decide whether the Sequoyah Indians will have players declared ineligible or be allowed to play in the playoffs next week.

That all stems from last week’s temporary restraining order that allowed Sequoyah’s players to play against the Hornets. Sequoyah self-reported that 12 players had broken the summer camp participation rule and the OSSAA ruled them ineligible.

The school went to Cherokee County District Court to file and received a restraining order to allow the players to play. The court at the time ruled the OSSAA had violated the school’s due process.

OSSAA Executive Director Ed Sheakley met with Sequoyah parents in Tulsa on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Hilldale waits to see what happens next.

“We’re probably in the dark as much as anybody,” Kirkhart said. “Nobody knows what’s going to happen. I’m sure they’re going to fight it like they did last week. Why wouldn’t they?”

As of now, Hilldale is the District 3A-7 runner-up. It will host the 3A-8 third place team in the playoffs.

“You got to look at it as we’re preparing to play a couple of teams,” Kirkhart said. “We’ll find out what’s going on.”

Meanwhile, the Hornets rolled up 293 rushing yards in steamrolling the Yellowjackets.

Hilldale led 21-0 after the first quarter and 41-0 at halftime.

Kirkhart sat the starters to begin the second half and the game was played with a running clock as the Hornets finished 5-1 in 3A-7 and head to the postseason with at 8-2 overall. Westville finished at 0-6 and 1-9.

The win might have been costly as inside linebacker-offensive lineman Jake Adams hurt his right knee and walked off the field in crutches. The extent of his injury was not known.

“We’ll find out probably (today),” Kirkhart said. “He planted it and it gave out on him. We don’t want to lose anybody. I hate it for him. I don’t want to speculate he’s out, but it doesn’t look good.”

Wide receiver-cornerback Bradley Campbell was also hurt at the end of the first half, but Kirkhart said he was OK.

Hilldale’s offense was more than OK in scoring a season-high for points.

Individually, Jamaul Cullom scored three touchdowns on runs of 20, 4 and 10 yards in gaining 37 yards on four carries, while Seth Reheard had 42 yards on nine carries and two TDs on runs of two and three yards.

The backups also got into the act as Hunter Woods scored on a 68-yard run with 43.1 seconds left in the third quarter and Wyatt O’Neal scampered five yards for a TD with 4:29 remaining in the period. Woods finished with a game-high 107 yards rushing on six carries.

Hilldale’s other TD came when Miles Jackson returned a punt 75 yards with 2:16 left in the first period.

Westville could only get 74 yards in total offense against the Hornets, who were coming off a 28-0 loss to Sequoyah in the game for the 3A-7 championship last Friday.
