Bacone rallies past Rogers St.
A wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth scored Tony Mendez with the winning run as Bacone defeated Rogers State and losing pitcher Jesus Del Rosario, 6-5 at Warrior Field on Wednesday.
Bacone trailed 4-1 through 3 1/2 innings but rallied with a pair of fourth-inning runs and one in each frame the rest of the way, including a leadoff home run in the seventh by Eric Folkers.
Porter High ex Cody McBride (1-0) slammed the door on a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the eighth with an ground out force play at the plate, a strikeout and an infield fly for the final out. McBride relieved Alberto Pena, who faced a similar jam in the fifth and got out of the inning with a double play. Starter Allen Rimer gave up seven hits and four runs, three earned in 4 1/3 innings.
Bacone was outhit 10-6. Steven Smith went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI. He was the only Warrior with a multi-hit game.
The Warriors (5-3) get Graceland University for a pair of home doubleheaders at noon Friday and 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
Connors State rained out
Connors State’s season baseball opener with Ozark University at Biff Thomson Field on Wednesday was postponed due to wet playing conditions. The game has been rescheduled for March 25.
The Cowboys will now play their season opener on Saturday in the USA Baseball Invitational in Millington, Tenn.
Connors will play Shawnee, Ill., Community College at 11:30 a.m. and Lake, Ill., College at 5 p.m. Saturday. On Sunday the Cowboys take on Ellsworth, Ill. Community College at 9:30 a.m. and Mineral, Area, Mo., Community College at noon.
The Cowboys’ home opener is now set for Wednesday against Bacone College.
Bacone drops softball twinbill
Rogers State’s bats never cooled off as they were able to defeat the Bacone Lady Warriors 14-0 and 9-0 in two five-inning run rules Wednesday afternoon.
The Lady Hillcats outhit Bacone 14-4 and the Lady Warriors were unable to take advantage of the few opportunities they had. Tarah Moutray’s bases-loaded groundout in the third and Kelli Costello’s strikeout in the fourth, also with the bases loaded, hurt the Warriors’ chances. Taylor Paulson (1-1) took the loss, allowing 13 earned on 16 hits. Krissy Froelich finished 1-for-2 with a walk.
Lucy Walter (0-2) was charged with the loss in the second game, allowing nine runs over five innings.
Bacone (1-3) will face Evangel (Mo.) next Tuesday at home in a doubleheader starting at 1:30 p.m.
