All-State soccer games come to town on Thursday

The All-State stage has largely been centered in the state’s two major metropolitan areas.

That spotlight shifts this week.

Muskogee’s Creek Nation Field at Indian Bowl will be the host site for the Oklahoma Soccer Coaches Association All-State Games.  Muskogee girls coach Curt Denton made a bid for the games which were awarded to the school in January.

“We’ve never had this opportunity and I believe we have a great facility to serve as a host site,” Denton said. “It’s always a good thing to have people come here to spend dollars.”

There will be three games over three days, starting with the Class 4A boys and girls games on Thursday. Class 5A contests are Friday and 6A is Saturday. Girls games start at 6 p.m. with the boys following at 8.

Each squad will have 20 kids, amounting to 120 and their families in town for one of the three nights.

In Class 4A, locally, the East girls squad will be represented by Leah Gragg of Hilldale, Shelby Nichols and Brooke Benham of Fort Gibson, Mikayla Taylor of Wagoner and Breanna Scott of Keys. The 4A boys include Daniel Mielnik, Zach Cobler and Zachary Peterson of Fort Gibson, which wound up reaching the semifinals this season.

The 5A East rosters have four from Tahlequah: Sam Chaffin, Kalie Champlain and Rachel Brown on the girls team and Saul Medina on the boys squad.

Host Muskogee has Morgan Springborn on the East girls team. Shawn Riley, who led Muskogee to its first postseason berth in four seasons, will coach the East boys along with Tim Denton as an assistant. David Espinoza is the only Rougher to make the team as a player.

Some of the “local” representation will come from other parts. Robyn Brewster, who played for Curt Denton at Muskogee, is the head coach at Heritage Hall and will serve on the 5A West girls staff.

“Muskogee has a good presence this week with these games and we have an opportunity to show that we do have a good tradition here,” Denton said. “Hopefully we can hook it up and run with the momentum from it.”
