Published March 17, 2009 11:17 am - Federal court rules against Oklahoma tribes WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal appeals court has ruled against the Cheyenne-Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma in a case against the government involving about 7,000 acres of land in western Oklahoma. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit on Tuesday upheld a district court ruling that dismissed the tribes' request for the title to the land near Fort Reno. The tribes believe the land was to revert to them when the government no longer needed it for military purposes. The Army stopped using the land during the 1950s but the government contends the tribes' claim on the land died in 1891 when the reservation was allotted and the tribes signed an agreement giving up the remaining 400,000 acres.
