Published May 05, 2009 09:15 am - Letters with powder sent to 3 hospitals BRISTOW, Okla. (AP) — Federal investigators are looking into letters containing powder that were sent to three northeast Oklahoma hospitals. Kevin Gunn of Community Partners says hospitals in Bristow, Fairfax and Vinita that are operated by the company all received the letters yesterday. The Bristow hospital was locked down after powder fell out of an envelope when its corner was torn. Gunn says a hazardous materials crew determined the substance was garlic powder. Similar letters were sent to the other two hospitals. FBI Special Agent Gary Johnson says while initial tests have indicated the powder was harmless, it was sent to a lab for additional testing. Johnson says in most cases of this type, the substance turns out to be harmless, but the FBI isn't taking what happened lightly and is trying to determine whether the intent of the sender was malicious.
