LAWTON, Okla. (AP) — The uncle of a 14-year-old girl who died in a traffic accident east of Lawton says both families involved in the wreck were headed to a southern Oklahoma church camp.
The accident on Monday killed Jani Hawkey, whose mother had decided to take her to a nearby convenience store for a drink. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says their car was hit by a sport utility vehicle driven by 35-year-old Amie Rose, who was making a left turn.
Kevin Hawkey, the girl's uncle, says the Hawkey and Rose families both attend Letitia Baptist Church. He says Jani was to board a bus at the church that would take her to Falls Creek youth camp.
Gina Hawkey suffered a broken leg and wrist. Amie Rose and three of her passengers were treated at a Lawton hospital and released.
