TULSA (AP) — A 94-year-old World War II veteran has finally received the Prisoner of War Medal and other honors after a decades-long wait.

Phillip Coon also received a Bronze Star and the Combat Infantryman Badge during an informal ceremony Monday night at Tulsa International Airport.

Coon, who lives in Sapulpa, was just returning from Japan, where government officials there apologized to him and other veterans over how they were treated during the war.

Coon survived a Japanese labor camp and the Bataan Death March, in which tens of thousands of soldiers were forced on a 65-mile trek by the Japanese military.
