State recognized for higher ed

OKLAHOMA CITY  — The White House will recognize Oklahoma next week for its effort in college remediation education.

Oklahoma’s Complete College America program will be recognized at the White House on Dec. 11. Business Roundtable, an association of CEOs of leading U.S. companies, has also applauded the program, according to a story published Thursday in The Oklahoman.

Complete College America is a national nonprofit that works to increase the number of Americans with career certificates or college degrees. Oklahoma joined in 2011.

Oklahoma is one of 10 states that ties dollars to progress and success rather than enrollment.

Tony Hutchison, vice chancellor for workforce and economic development for the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, said that for the past two years, appropriations have been allocated based on performance factors.

“Performance funding is our strongest area (of Complete College America),” he said.

Hutchison said the program rewards schools for success. Each institution submits a plan for degree completion based on its mix of students.

“We are making very diligent efforts to complete college education in Oklahoma,” Hutchison said.
