Girl killed, 3 kids hurt in SUV crash; boy, 13, was driver

COLBERT (AP) — A 10-year-old girl was killed and three children injured after a 13-year-old boy crashed a sport utility vehicle in southeastern Oklahoma, authorities said Monday.

The Oklahoma Department of Public Safety said Abigail Jones of Colbert died when the sport utility vehicle went off the roadway and rolled about 3:25 p.m. Sunday.

Jones was ejected from the vehicle and the SUV came to rest on top of her, according to an Oklahoma Highway Patrol report on the crash. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, another 13-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl were transported to area hospitals where the two boys were in good and stable condition, according to the OHP, and the girl was treated and released.

The names of the three injured were not released.

The SUV “ran off roadway to the right, overcorrected causing the vehicle to roll 1 and 1/2 times, coming to rest on the driver’s side,” the Department of Public Safety said in a news release.

The agency said the car was traveling at an unsafe speed and none of the passengers was wearing a safety belt.

A spokeswoman for the Oklahoma Highway Patrol referred questions to Capt. George Brown, who did not immediately respond to questions for comment from the AP.

Authorities were still investigating the cause of the accident.

Witness Ray Paap told TV station KTEN that emergency personnel from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the sheriff’s department, the fire department and a few ambulances descended on the dirt road after the SUV rolled onto its side.

Caitlin Perry, a friend of the 10-year-old victim, said the situation was horrible.

“I can’t believe she’s gone,” she told KTEN about Jones, who was involved in Girl Scouts and cheerleading.

“She loved life; she loved living out here in the country,” Perry said.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Lt. Scott Hampton told KXII the accident is a reminder that people should wear seatbelts and reduce their speeds on county roads.
