‘Crack Art’ could spread along McAlester sidewalk

McALESTER — It’s called “Crack Art” and it could be covering most of the sidewalks on Choctaw Avenue in McAlester, according to artist Anita Jackson.

Jackson is an artist featured in the Southeastern Oklahoma Fine Arts Art Gallery in McAlester.

She recently created a 3-D-illusion “Crack Art” painting in front of the SOFA Art Gallery at 30 E. Choctaw Ave.

“With Crack Art, we use existing sidewalk cracks to create art,” Jackson said.

The painting features a diving board hanging over a lake that appears to be at the bottom of a canyon.

The idea was conceived by Anne Parrott of the Downtown Merchants Association, Jackson said.

“Our goal is to bring art to downtown and we are doing this by having artists paint the sidewalks,” Jackson said.

“Mine is the first one but we hope to have many more.”

She said it took her about 12 hours over two days to complete the painting.

To get the full effect of the painting, Jackson said it’s best to look at it through a camera lens.

She also said SOFA is holding a competition for the most original photo using the sidewalk art.

“We are looking for the coolest pics you can take with the painting.”

She said pictures can be emailed to her at hauscaran@hotmail.com.

“We will gather all the photos and put them on our SOFA Facebook page for people to judge,” she said.

The winner will get a small prize, such as a $15 print from a local artist, she said.

Jackson said SOFA is accepting donations of paint and varnish for the sidewalk art.

For more information or to donate paint, email Jackson at hauscaran@hotmail.com or visit the SOFA Facebook page.
