Escort Chris Godman kisses Sarah Aukerman on the hand after she was named 2007 Hilldale High School band queen on Friday.

First United Methodist Church Youth Director Sherri Rosson was a dot of Muskogee Rougher green in a sea of Hilldale Hornet red at Friday’s Hilldale High School band queen coronation.

Who could blame her? It was her second band queen coronation of the day and she didn’t have time to change her shirt from Muskogee’s coronation that morning.

“I’m out here to support the kids, tell them we’re interested in their lives outside the church,” she said. “The Hilldale king is one of our church kids, Chris Godman, and so is the freshman escort, Joe Wills. At Muskogee, a bunch of kids are cheerleaders or on the dance team. John Mladucky, the sophomore escort is one of our kids.”

Hilldale band queen contestants received plenty of support from church friends, parents, classmates and teachers Friday.

Senior Sarah Aukerman, a band member for the past six years, was crowned band queen. Godman, her escort, presented her with a red bouquet as he crowned her. Her white gown billowed as Godman twirled her around and kissed her hand.

Spotlights formed lighted hearts as the red curtain opened on a stage decorated with quarter notes and treble clefs.

After the coronation, Aukerman said she and senior attendant Laurel Smith both got their formal dresses last Thursday, the day she was named queen.

“These were the first ones we picked out,” Aukerman said.

Aukerman said she was very nervous and excited about being queen.

She is the daughter of Patti and Ted Aukerman and president of National Honor Society. She is a member of Eastside Community Church and hopes to attend Mid-Christian University to become “a successful worship leader.”
